Dr. Newgard is a Professor of Emergency Medicine, practicing emergency physician, and physician scientist at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, Oregon. He is Director of the Center for Policy and Research in Emergency Medicine at OHSU, a position that bridges emergency care research and health policy. He has been continuously funded through federal research grants (NIH, AHRQ, CDC) for 19 years, the majority of which have focused on field triage, trauma systems, trauma care, and emergency medical services. He has over 150 peer-reviewed articles and has served on multiple national committees, including the CDC National Expert Panel on Field Triage and the National Quality Forum for Trauma Outcomes. His current research examines long-term outcomes and costs of injured older adults served through the 911 EMS system (AHRQ #R01HS023796) and a national assessment of ED/hospital “readiness” in caring for injured children (NICHD #R24HD085927). Dr. Newgard has also been involved in multiple national scientific leadership positions and emergency care research networks, including the NHLBI-funded Resuscitation Outcomes Consortium, Co-founder and Chair of the first national inter-CTSA emergency care research network (53 sites). He has also directed a NIH K12 to train interdisciplinary faculty in emergency care research since 2013.
