Dr. Michael Puskarich, MD, MS, is a clinician scientist with a focus on early diagnosis and prognosis of critically ill patients and translational clinical trials. His research interest focuses on the initial assessment, prognosis, and treatment of patients with sepsis. He has a particular interest in the repurposing of low cost, FDA approved medications for new indications by leveraging properties of common medications to mitigate organ failure through the early interruption of dysfunctional, pathophysiologic responses to an acute insult. Examples of this work includes clinical trials of metabolic therapies such as L-carnitine and insulin to attempt to treat cardiovascular failure in sepsis and the use of losartan to try to mitigate pathologic angiotensin II signalling in COVID-19.
