Shan Liu is the Geriatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship Director at Massachusetts General Hospital and the President of the Academy of Geriatric Emergency Medicine Executive Board. She leads innovative research and implements initiatives that aim to decrease morbidity and mortality among older adults who present to the ED after falls. Her falls research has demonstrated that older ED fall patients have high adverse event rates, that current ED care is often discordant with national ED fall guidelines, and that there are significant challenges to implementing ED fall-prevention initiatives. Her research and expertise have helped guide implementation of ED fall programs on a national level. She has lectured nationally and internationally to educate emergency practitioners that falls are sentinel events that require a multifactorial response to mitigate their serious consequences.
