Earl J. Reisdorff, M.D., is Executive Director of the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM), a post he has held since 2010. Dr. Reisdorff attended medical school at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, and completed his residency training in Emergency Medicine at the Michigan State University program in Lansing, Michigan, where he also served as Chief Resident. He has been an ABEM diplomate since 1986.
Prior to becoming Executive Director, Dr. Reisdorff was a practicing emergency physician, Emergency Medicine Program Director, and Director of Medical Education at Ingham Regional Medical Center in Lansing, Michigan; and an associate professor in Emergency Medicine and past Program Director of the Michigan State University Emergency Medicine Residency Program.
Dr. Reisdorff has authored multiple peer-reviewed articles and 17 chapters in eight different texts. He is the co-editor of two key textbooks, Emergency Radiology and Pediatric Emergency Medicine. He has presented over 300 scientific and didactic presentations in the United States and internationally. He was a journal peer reviewer for five different journals and was an invited reviewer for the Journal of the American Medical Association. He has given numerous research presentations at scientific meetings. His research interests largely focused on physician assessment.
Dr. Reisdorff served on the Board of Directors of the Michigan College of Emergency Physicians (MCEP), for which he also served as President. In 2003, Dr. Reisdorff was appointed by the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) to the Council on Graduate Medical Education, an advisory group to both DHHS and the Congress on physician workforce and training. From 2015-2018, he has served as Chair of the Member Board Executive Caucus of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), a group composed of the Executive Directors of the 24 ABMS certifying specialty boards. He currently serves on the ABMS Board of Directors and is a member of the Continuing Board Certification: Vision for the Future Commission.
Dr. Reisdorff has won many awards, including Alpha Omega Alpha honors; the Walter F. Patenge Medal of Public Service from the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine; the Ronald L. Krome, M.D., Meritorious Service Award from the Michigan College of Emergency Physicians; and the Outstanding Contribution to Education Award from American College of Emergency Physicians. He has also won numerous teaching awards.
Earl Reisdorff is also a published composer and arranger. His works have been performed throughout the United States and recorded by the Grammy Award–winning Michigan State University Children’s Choir, the Henschel String Quartet, and soloists from the Tölzer Boys Choir (Germany). One of his compositions was runner-up in a BBC Music composition contest. He lives with his wife, Jane, in Okemos, Michigan. He has two grown daughters, Rebecca and Hannah.
