Anne C. Mosenthal, M.D., FACS, MAMSE is the Chief Academic Officer at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center, and Academic Dean at Tufts University School of Medicine. Prior to this role, Dr Mosenthal was Professor and Benjamin F Rush Jr Endowed Chair of Surgery at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School for over nine years. She received her undergraduate degree from Cornell University, her medical degree from Dartmouth Medical School, completed her surgical residency training at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, and surgical critical care fellowship at the Massachusetts General Hospital.
A trauma surgeon and intensivist, Dr. Mosenthal is nationally recognized in academic surgery as a pioneer in the field of surgical palliative care. She founded the first division of surgical palliative care in a department of surgery in the nation. Her research and advocacy have led to the development of this emerging field as a subspecialty of surgery, with board certification sponsored by the American Board of Surgery. She has developed innovative models integrating palliative care into critical care, trauma, and surgery that have led to the creation of this new field. As an educator, she has advanced novel curricula and interdisciplinary training programs in end of life communication skills across the spectrum of learners, from medical student to resident to practicing surgeon. Her research focuses on surgical palliative care, survivorship in trauma and critical care outcomes,. She is the editor of the book Surgical Palliative Care from Oxford University Press. She is Chair of the American College of Surgeons Committee on Surgical Palliative Care for the last five years, past Chair of the AAST Palliative Care Task Force and a member of the American College of Surgeons Ethics Committee . There are now over 80 surgeons trained and boarded in surgical palliative care across the United States.
