Michael F. Rotondo completed a BS degree in chemistry and MS degree in cardiovascular physiology at Georgetown University, followed by medical school at the same institution. He then completed his general surgical training at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital before becoming the first Fellow in Traumatology and Surgical Critical Care at the University of Pennsylvania. He accepted his first academic post at Penn, rising to direct its Level One Trauma Center and serve as Vice Chief of Traumatology and Surgical Critical Care. In 1999, he was recruited by The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University, where he was Professor of Surgery, built a Level I Trauma Center for eastern North Carolina and became Chair of the Department of Surgery in 2003. In 2013, Rotondo was recruited back to Rochester in his current positions as CEO of the Faculty Group. At the same time, he was named—Vice Dean of Clinical Affairs and Professor of Surgery—and serves as Senior Vice President teh medical center. Dr. Rotondo is recognized for his pioneering research and education around “damage control surgery.” Dr. Rotondo has served as President of the Eastern Association of the Surgery of Trauma, the Halsted Society and the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma.
Dr. Rotondo began serving as Chair of the North Carolina Regional COT Committee in 2003, and was appointed to the Central Committee of the COT in 2006 as Chair of the Trauma System Evaluation and Planning Committee. As Chair of the COT in 2010, Dr. Rotondo re-organized the committees of the COT into the pillar structure that is still used today. During his term he oversaw the 2014 revision of the Optimal Resources for the Care of the Injured Patient and focues on international promulgation of COT programs. He established the International Injury Care Committee (I2C2).
