Resident
University of Washington
Joseph Bellairs, MD is a fifth-year resident at the University of Washington. He studied biochemistry and mathematics at Colby College. Afterwards, he joined Dr. Loren Walenksy’s laboratory at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute where he applied chemical biology techniques to develop novel pediatric cancer treatments. He then pursued his medical education at the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine. During medical school, he worked with Dr. James LaBelle to research peptide amphiphiles as novel anticancer agents. He graduated with Honors and was selected for AOA membership. He chose to complete his Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery training at the University of Washington because of the exceptional research training opportunities and a dedicated group of surgeon-scientist mentors. During his third and fourth years of training, he completed a T32 research fellowship under the mentorship of Dr. David Raible and Dr. Ed Rubel. His research focused on deciphering the mechanism of ORC-13661, a novel otoprotective therapeutic. His work included developing an in vivo mammalian system to better characterize ototoxic compounds and novel protective therapeutics. This work was also supported by grants from the American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery Foundation CORE grant and a University of Washington Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Research Development Program fellowship. After completing his surgical training, he looks forward to completing subspecialty fellowship before starting a career as an academic surgeon-scientist.
