Derek Root has 30 years of experience in the technology industry. He has spent time in several private sector corporations as well as in federal and SLED environments. Originally from the Washington DC area, Derek has served with variety of private sector corporations including a global event services company (Maritz), a value-added integrator (Presidio) and a boutique federal consulting firm (ICS). His experiences range from hands on engineering and security work to leadership roles.
He has worked across a wide range of industries including: manufacturing, insurance, medical and drug companies, higher educational and hospital systems. He has also had extensive experience with the Department of Defense, the Department of Transportation and spent several years consulting to the Department of Homeland Security’s CISO’S office.
In 2013 Derek joined Frederick County Public Schools in Maryland as the head of the technology department and also served as CTO for Washington County Public Schools there. In 2017 Derek accepted the CTO position for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools in North Carolina where he served for 4 years. Derek currently works as a technical business development manager in the education vertical of AWS’s Worldwide Public Sector group. In that role he is responsible for solutions development and integration of AWS infrastructure and cyber security services across the education enterprise.
