The 150-year-old Berkeley campus has evolved over three principal periods of American landscape design. Review the evolution of planning and design from Frederick Law Olmsted’s concept plan to modern-day practitioners, learn how planning and design shapes campus climate resilience, and discover how the campus landscape continues to evolve.

Learning Outcomes:

Understand how the Berkeley campus represents a collage of three periods of significance in American landscape design: Picturesque, Beaux Arts and Modern; and how they are sustained and interrelate.
Learn the history and evolution of the central campus park featuring trees from around the world, bisected by forks of Strawberry Creek and chain of glades through the campus core.
Learn design strategies utilized at Berkeley to adapt to diverse needs, growth of programs & enrollment, and heightened necessity for outdoor learning areas.
Review emerging campus-wide sustainability and green infrastructure strategies that will restore Strawberry Creek and enhance stormwater management in response to realities of climate change and drought.
