Due to the large number and importance of coastal wetlands in Chile and Panama, different approaches are proposed to promote the rational use of wetlands threatened by urban processes. Each place functions as a laboratory of solutions according to their contexts: the development of legislation from scratch, and market-based mechanisms.

Learning Outcomes:

Understand the importance of coastal wetlands for the viability of urban populations in Latin America at the light of two case studies in Chile and Panamá.
Discuss two approaches to conserve urban wetlands–policy and market-based mechanisms–that negotiate between urban pressures and the site’s relevance for ecosystem services, such as coastal resilience, and habitat for migratory birds.
Delve into the procedural aspects of the case studies, including stakeholder engagement, challenges and negotiations, milestones, breakthroughs, measurable results, and lessons learned.
Explore the effectiveness of a transdisciplinary approach to address pressing socio-ecological challenges in coastal landscapes, considering the impacts of each case study.
