The California cities of Anaheim and Riverside emerged from the Santa Ana River in the mid-1850s and have both experienced similar histories of agriculture, industrialism, and neglect. Today, the opportunities to transform these cities’ riverfronts into resilient, profitable, and accessible destinations could not be more different.

Learning Outcomes:

Recognize how past and present policies have created underutilized riverfronts and suggest policy shifts to help underrepresented communities benefit from growth and investment.
Learn how to design riverfronts and climate adapted landscapes that provide habitat, recreation, active transportation, economic development, housing, sustainable watershed management, flood management, groundwater recharge, and erosion control.
Understand how a vision built from intentional community engagement can create socio-culturally relevant designs.
Learn about strategies and partnerships to mitigate past development and create a high functioning public realm while advancing spatial justice and private development.
