Ninety percent of all natural disasters in the US involve flooding. Historically marginalized communities in the US experience a disproportionate amount of adverse impact from floods. In this session we highlight structural problems of classism and racism in our system and ways we can bridge the equity gap.

Learning Outcomes:

Understand how current programs and rules discriminate, e.g., via cost-benefit analysis, local funding match requirements, preferential treatment for owners over renters.
Learn from specific examples of post-disaster recovery efforts in poor (Lower Rio Grande Valley, Texas) and rich (Montecito, California) communities.
Learn about new legislative tools to reduce the equity gap while managing flood risk in cities.
Learn land use planning tools to build more flood-resilient and equitable cities in the future.
