Policy and design are interconnected, as are land and ocean. Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson, in conversation with Kate Orff, FASLA, shares how we can all tap into our skills, resources, and networks to create enduring climate solutions for communities.
Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson is a marine biologist, policy expert, writer, and Brooklyn native. She is co-founder of Urban Ocean Lab, a think tank for the future of coastal cities. She co-edited the bestselling climate anthology All We Can Save, co-founded The All We Can Save Project, and co-created the Spotify/Gimlet climate solutions podcast How to Save a Planet. Recently, she co-authored the Blue New Deal, a roadmap for including the ocean in climate policy. Previously, she was executive director of the Waitt Institute, developed policy at the EPA and NOAA, and taught as an adjunct professor at New York University.
Kate Orff, FASLA, is the Founder of SCAPE and a Professor at Columbia University. She leads complex projects and processes that weave together policy, ideation, and implementation. She serves on Boards and national initiatives like the American Academy of Arts and Sciences Commission on Accelerating Climate Action. She also contributed the chapter “Mending the Landscape” to All We Can Save: Truth, Courage and Solutions for the Climate Crisis.
