2161V - The Evolution of Telepractice in Speech-Language Pathology

This session will examine the evolution of telepractice within the field of speech-language pathology using literature and speaker experiences. The speaker will introduce telepractice in language therapy in the 1970s and 1980s and reflect on ASHA’s adoption through the 1990s and 2000s across most speech-language pathology-related domains. Specific focus on advantages and opportunities, both pre and “during”-COVID19, will highlight considerations for optimizing and best practice. In addition, the session will include the pivot of in-person to virtual stroke support groups and considerations for these ancillary yet vital rehabilitative opportunities. Finally, there will be opportunities to reflect on cultural humility through a review of telepractice growth and adoption worldwide.
