Vocal exertion (or vocal loading) occurs frequently in professional and social situations. Recent studies have characterized the impact of vocal exertion on laryngeal and respiratory physiology. Emerging research has also examined how the negative consequences of vocal exertion might distinctly affect different populations of speakers. Such data may determine why only some speakers are susceptible to developing voice disorders. This presentation will synthesize recent vocal exertion studies, focusing specifically on comparing the effects of vocal exertion on individuals reporting varied levels of vocal fatigue, and data on mitigating the effects of vocal exertion.
Learning Objectives:
Explain the impact of acute vocal exertion on laryngeal and respiratory measures.
Describe how the effects of vocal exertion differ between individuals reporting low and high levels of vocal fatigue.
Explain the literature on mitigating the effects of vocal exertion.
