1147L - Social Determinants of Health: Increasing Health Literacy for BIPOC Communities through Financial Literacy Programming

This session is developed by, and presenters invited by, Health Literacy: Access, Communication, and Outcomes. This session will discuss the development of a community financial literacy and public health initiative to increase health literacy in BIPOC communities. The ultimate objective of each program was to increase health outcomes in BIPOC communities in a sustainable fashion. Attendees will learn about the intersection of the social determinants of health (SDH), financial literacy, and health literacy in BIPOC communities. Section content includes: (1) theoretical underpinnings of a financial literacy engagement and a public health initiative; (2) a process to engage families in a financial literacy initiative through community-led mentoring; (3) development of a public health initiative led by Black youth for BIPOC communities; (3) implications for increasing health literacy in a sustainable fashion by targeting social determinants of health and its relation to communication disorders.
