“English spelling is irregular.” “I before E except after C.” “When two vowels go walking, the first does the talking.” We may have heard (or even believe) some of these spelling myths. In this session, we will dispel these myths and discuss the regularity and rules of the English orthography. Attendees will learn definitions for spelling-related terms, as well as the organizing principles of English spellings. We will also review research on how including spellings promotes enhanced and efficient learning. With an understanding why words are spelled the way they are, and an understanding of evidence-based practices, attendees will gain new ideas on how to incorporate printed words into their intervention.
