The demand for cardiovascular surgery is expected to continue increasing in response to an expanding and aging population. Cardiovascular disease, and the subsequent life-saving cardiovascular surgeries, are both associated with an increased risk of dysphagia. This course will discuss the emerging role of the Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) in Cardiovascular Intensive Care Units (CVICUs), and the importance of early detection and management of dysphagia for the post-surgical population.

Describe the rationale for early assessment and intervention of dysphagia in the acute cardiovascular post-operative period
