Story Emotion Social Therapy (SEST) is an interdisciplinary SLP and mental health framework based upon the healing power of words because these two professions are bridged by the stories individuals tell in treatment. SEST’s interprofessional collaboration has domain-specific roles and responsibilities for SLPs and mental health providers to help individuals communicate thoughts and feelings about speech and language and other challenges, incorporate more realistic cognitive mindsets, and enhance social interactions. Children with social communication disorder may demonstrate difficulties with storytelling. Practical application of SEST using fictional and personal stories will be demonstrated to better understand the needs of children with social communication.
Learning Objectives:
Identify the SEST scholarship and theoretical framework bridging the roles of SLPs and mental health (MH) providers.
Tell the SLP’S role in SEST and indicators for referring children to MH providers for psychotherapy.
Describe fictional and personal story telling application of SEST to understand children’s social communication needs.
