Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) working in public schools have the responsibility to identify students with learning deficits, enabling them to receive supports needed for academic success. Misidentification of ADHD and co-morbid communication disorders can lead to students receiving inappropriate services and inhibit students from receiving educational benefit from current programming. This seminar will provide participants with an overview of the diagnosis of ADHD and define different ways ADHD may manifest within the educational setting in students with co-morbid communication disorders. Participants will identify suggested therapy targets, review modification strategies, and classroom accommodations that can be added to any IEP. Although the target audience is the school-based SLP, the session will provide valuable information for any professional working within the public-school system.
Learning Objectives:
Differentiate ADHD and co-morbid communication disorders and the way they may manifest in students within the educational setting.
Analyze behavioral observations and evidence-based management strategies for ADHD and communication disorders as it pertains to working within the public-school system.
Identify strategies and therapeutic goals to implement as an SLP/Special Education Teacher.
