Self-assessment and self-diagnosis is on the rise in autistic adults (Lewis, 2016). This is due in part to lack of availability of medical professionals with interest and expertise in autism in older adults. Screening tools are often a first step in the self-diagnosis process but autism is not a one-size-fits-all condition; heterogeneity is a hallmark. This complicates not only diagnosis but planning moving forward from there. In this session we will review data on some aspects of diagnosis and self-assessment and include excerpts from a recorded interview with Debra Brisch, owner of https://oldladywithautism.blog/
Learning Objectives:
Describe the challenges encountered by adults seeking a diagnosis of autism
Evaluate existing data derived via self-assessment by autistic adults
Relate the existing data to impressions from an autistic adult about the challenges and benefits of self-assessment
