1033L - Pearls of Wisdom in the Management of Motor Speech Disorders: Reframing the Classics

This session is developed by, and presenters invited by, Motor Speech Disorders and Other Speech Sound Disorders in Adults. This session provides an opportunity to reflect on the foundations of the management of motor speech disorders with experts in the field. Three experts will each revisit a seminal work that has been a major influencing factor in the management and/or study of motor speech disorders. Reflecting the session title, “Pearls of Wisdom…,” the presenters will discuss and reevaluate formative works from leaders in the field of motor speech disorders relative to extant research. The topics that will be addressed concern critical issues in the diagnosis and management of motor speech disorders, including differential diagnosis of the dysarthrias and acquired apraxia of speech, as well as therapeutic strategies. The presentations will focus on clinical application of the reinterpretation of these works by examining the current evidence base and suggesting how recent evidence should modulate current practices. There will be ample opportunities for audience members to engage with the experts and each other to share ideas concerning reframing clinical practice and research.
