Some brass musicians experience a hesitation or "get stuck" when playing their instrument. The results of a survey of brass musicians about this "blocking" will be discussed. The characteristics of blocking in musicians when playing brass instruments will be compared with characteristics of stuttering in speech. Similarities and differences between the brass musician's responses and the development of speech stuttering, including core behaviors, secondary behaviors, and feelings and attitudes will be highlighted. Possible etiologies of brass blocking and stuttering, such as dystonia/neurological and environmental, will also be discussed.
