1679L - Lateral Lisp Remediation: From Elicitation to Generalization

Since lateral lisps are distortions and not developmental in nature, SLPs know that they should be remediated early; however, elicitation of correctly produced phonemes can be difficult among young children, as well as carryover to varying word positions and generalization to spontaneous speech. This presentation will focus on 1) properly assessing a child’s speech mechanism to uncover or rule out underlying structural/functional deficits that could impede progress in therapy, 2) teaching practical therapy tips to help SLPs elicit non-lateralized target phonemes using phonetic shaping and cognitive reframing, and 3) how to promote generalization by incorporating principles of motor learning into therapy. Videos of actual therapy sessions will be presented to show examples of elicitation techniques in real-world situations.
