Parkinson’s disease is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by various movement disorders. Speech production is a motoric behavior, and it is common for individuals with PD to experience verbal communication difficulties. Allied health professionals such as Physical Therapists, Occupational therapists, and Speech-Language Pathologists (SLP) aim to improve the client’s behavioral patterns through therapeutic effort. Intuitively, therapists agree that different instructions provided yield various outcomes. However, objective outcome measurements from different instructions have not yet been conducted. The present study examined the voice/speech outcomes under two different instructions, including “Speak Loud” and “Speak with Intent.” The former phrase is used by the Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT)® program, and the latter phrase is used by the SPEAK OUT!® program.
