Dysphonia is a potential consequence of preterm birth. Risk factors have been identified relating to gross laryngeal damage, yet it is not known whether premature birth affects laryngeal structure, or the histological development of the vocal folds. We present preliminary, gross morphological findings on a set of ovine larynges, including extremely preterm, very preterm and term-born specimens. We will outline differences that we identified in the term-born and preterm lambs, and differences between lamb and human larynges. We will discuss the implications of these differences, both in terms of what they tell us about preterm birth and laryngeal development, as well as the suitability of ovine modeling for human voice.
