Congenital heart disease (CHD) accounts for nearly one-third of all major congenital anomalies (Van Der Linde, 2011) and approximately 30% of congenital heart disease is thought to be related to genetic syndromes (Ko, 2015). A speech-language pathologist is a vital member of the multidisciplinary team that treats infants and children with CHD. Knowledge of both the cardiac and genetic medical underpinnings and their feeding-swallowing ramifications is critical for the implementation and delivery of evidenced-based care. This presentation will outline the feeding-swallowing difficulties and the cardiac anomalies frequently present in the following genetic diagnoses: Trisomy 21, Turner Syndrome, Williams Syndrome, CHARGE, and 22q11.2. Clinicians will be provided with a review of the current literature and practice-focused, clinically relevant information.
