As SLPs learn more about the neurodiversity paradigm, cultural competency, and anti-ableist practices, at times we find ourselves full of enthusiasm, but lacking in concrete strategies, especially when it comes to supporting our autistic students. In this session, led by an autistic SLP, we will discuss the essential principles of neurodiversity-affirming services, and gain an understanding of autistic masking and burnout (and why they are so harmful). However, we won’t stop there! The majority of our time together will be focused on learning actionable steps we can take to begin celebrating our students’ autistic identities while building their resilience and continuing to support their access to the curriculum.
Learning Objectives:
Define the terms masking and burnout as they relate to the lived experiences of autistic and other neurodivergent individuals
Name three key elements of neurodiversity-affirming SLP services
Modify their own practices as needed to support students’ access to the curriculum within a neurodiversity-affirming framework
