US universities’ support for strengthening speech, language and hearing (SLH) services internationally falls squarely within SDG 17 with its focus on revitalizing global partnerships for sustainable development. A key challenge is to foster equitable stable partnerships for lasting impact. Many academic SLH initiatives have brought important shorter term benefits in Low-Middle Income Countries (LMICs), but few have reached the tipping point of genuine sustainability. To achieve such sustainability, US university inputs need to be implemented in the context of multi-disciplinary, collaborative strategies to enhance the capacities both of individuals and also of local organizations/systems. Various strategic approaches exist - this session focuses on the Capacity Pyramid which we believe can help universities looking to build healthy and effective global partnerships.
