Avery I. McIntosh, PhD, is currently associate director of biostatistics at Apellis Pharmaceuticals. He earned his PhD from Boston University Department of Biostatistics, with a thesis on Bayesian methods for airborne respiratory disease transmission. While at BU, he worked on disease surveillance of multidrug resistant tuberculosis in South Africa, and was an instructor for statistical computing at the graduate School of Public Health. After graduating, he led the early phase statistical group in ophthalmology at Novartis Pharmaceuticals in Cambridge Massachusetts. Beyond ophthalmology, Dr. McIntosh has experience in multiple gene therapy programs: CAR-T, ex vivo adoptive cell therapies, and AAV gene therapies, primarily in ophthalmology and neurology indications. In his current role at Apellis, he supports early phase drug development, as well as late stage submission activities in ophthalmology. His research interests include design and analysis strategies in cell and gene therapies, methods for small sample inference, and use of real world evidence and historical data.
