Session Description

Enhanced inclusion of historically-excluded populations in research studies will increase scientific discovery and ultimately improve health for all populations. However, achieving more diversity among research participants is easier said than done. In the United States, history tells us that convenience sampling results in the inclusion of populations that are almost exclusively of European ancestry. Efforts to engage participants from underrepresented communities must be intentional, but also transparent and mutually beneficial. Ultimately, trust must be established between the communities and investigators.

In this session, our presenters will focus specifically on the challenges involved in the inclusion of participants from historically-excluded communities as well as strategies to overcome these hurdles. A live Q&A session will follow, allowing attendees to engage with our speakers regarding this thought-provoking topic.

Learning Objectives

1. Understand the challenges involved in the inclusion of historically-excluded populations for studies that require specimen collection to measure genetic and molecular biomarkers and apply strategies for enhanced engagement.

2. Illustrate how diversity among scientists will enable successful partnership of diverse populations.
