Professor and Chair, Department of Bioengineering and Therapeutic Sciences
University of California San Francisco
Deanna Kroetz is Professor and Chair of Bioengineering and Therapeutic Sciences and the Jere E. Goyan Chair for the Advancement of Pharmacy in the School of Pharmacy at the University of California San Francisco. She earned her BS in Pharmacy from The Ohio State University and her PhD in Pharmaceutics from the University of Washington, under the mentorship of Dr. Rene Levy. Dr. Kroetz was a PRAT Fellow in the Laboratory of Molecular Carcinogenesis at the National Cancer Institute under the mentorship of Dr. Frank Gonzalez before joining the faculty at the University of California San Francisco. Her research seeks to understand the molecular mechanisms of interindividual variability in drug response and toxicity. Current research includes clinical and functional genomics studies of chemotherapy-induced toxicity and investigations into the role of the ABC transporter MRP4 in resistance to cancer immunotherapy. Dr. Kroetz uses a reverse translational approach to understanding variability in response, with findings from clinical studies driving laboratory based mechanistic studies. She is also involved in teaching in the professional and graduate curricula at UCSF in the areas of pharmacokinetics, drug metabolism and membrane transport. Dr. Kroetz is highly involved in graduate education and directed the Pharmaceutical Sciences and Pharmacogenomics graduate program from 2010-2019. She has mentored numerous pharmacy students, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and visiting faculty and is committed to a laboratory culture that is inclusive and equitable and gives all trainees equal opportunities for success. She has been an active member of ASCPT for over 25 years and has served on a strategic planning task force, the scientific program committee, the board of directors and in community leadership. Dr. Kroetz is the Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Clinical and Translational Science.
