Prof. Dr. Petra A. Thürmann, MD, is Director of the Philipp Klee-Institute of Clinical Pharmacology, Helios University Clinic Wuppertal, Germany. She is Vice-President of the University of Witten/Herdecke, where she also holds the Chair of Clinical Pharmacology. After studies of Medicine at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe-University in Frankfurt/Main she received a board certified specialist’s degree in Clinical Pharmacology in 1992 and PhD (Habilitation) in 1997. 1997 appointment at the HELIOS University Clinic in Wuppertal and 1998 at the University of Witten/Herdecke. In the Helios hospital she supervises all clinical trials from phase I to IV and was also 2019 to 2021 Head of the Helios Center for Research and Innovation of the Helios Hospital group. Since 2006 Member of the Drug Commission of the German Medical Association and since 2011 member of the Advisory Council on the Assessment of Developments in the Health Care System (German Ministry of Health). Petra Thürmann joined ASCPT in 1997 and was member of the Executive Committee of the International Union of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology (IUPHAR) between 2004 and 2018. She is currently member of the Geriatric Pharmacology Subcommittee of IUPHAR. In her early career she investigated cardiovascular drugs in coronary artery disease and hypertension. Later she devoted her research to pharmacovigilance and was co-leader of the German Network of Pharmacovigilance Centers from 1998 to 2008, funded by the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices. Given the high prevalence of adverse drug reactions in older adults, Petra Thürmann became interested in geriatric clinical pharmacology. Inspired by the American Beers list of potentially inappropriate medication for the elderly she lead the development of the PRISCUS list, a comparable German initiative. She conducts clinical trials optimizing pharmacotherapy in nursing homes, hospitalised older adults as well as in ambulatory care.
