Artificial Intelligence: From Buzzword to Useful Tool in Clinical Pharmacology

Session Description

With the advances in computational capacity, applications of artificial intelligence (AI) in Clinical Pharmacology are emerging and developing rapidly. These uses of AI are gaining significant importance and progress in M&S and potentially in regulatory approvals. Due to the reduced assumptions and its capacity to leverage high dimensional data and describe nonlinear relationships, this technique shows promising prospects for advancing MIDD and clinical pharmacology decision-making.

Given the challenges associated with the increasing attrition and costs in drug development, clinical pharmacologists need to be well equipped to apply new techniques in MIDD to streamline and address scientific and regulatory needs of the development and translation of new therapies. In this session, a brief background on the use of AI in Clinical Pharmacology will be presented followed by a description of how AI models are being used by sponsors during drug development, including regulatory decisions. The session will continue with a couple of case studies focusing on the use of machine learning in predicting drug response in different therapeutic areas. An educative discussion on how Clinical Pharmacologists can be equipped to incorporate this technique and challenges to incorporate it in their tool kit will finalize the event.

1. Upon completion, participants will be able to understand the application of AI in model-informed drug development and clinical pharmacology decision-making, and some regulatory considerations when AI is applied in drug development.

2. Upon completion, participants will be able to learn the future of AI including the demonstration of its value as an emerging approach, and how Clinical Pharmacologists can be properly trained to support its incorporation as part of their toolkit.
