Dr. Lilong Chai is a tenure-track Assistant Professor & Engineering Specialist in the Department of Poultry Science, College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at the University of Georgia (UGA). He is a member of UGA Phenomics and Plant Robotics Center & Integrative Precision Agriculture team. Chai's research and Extension interests include animal environmental engineering, precision livestock farming, and poultry health and welfare. Prior to joining UGA, Chai was a postdoc research associate in the department of agricultural and biosystems engineering at Iowa State University (ISU). At ISU, Chai led the field study on commercial farms for two USDA-NIFA programs (both as Co-PI) for improving indoor air quality of cage-free egg production facilities and exploring practical means for preventing/controlling airborne infectious poultry diseases such as avian influenza. During study at Purdue University, Chai participated the National Air Emissions Monitoring Study (NAEMS) project, one of world’s largest animal environment monitoring programs. Chai was leading/co-leading the emissions monitoring/data analysis of two Indiana poultry monitoring sites, a North Carolina poultry site, and a California dairy site in the NAEMS project. Chai’s contributions include 100+ scientific publications, PI/Co-PI of over 20 grants/contracts, and 20+ awards/honors including the 2021 Sunkist Young Designer Award from the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE). Chai is currently the Coordinator/program Chair of Georgia Precision Poultry Farming Conference & Georgia Layer Conference, Vice Chair of ASABE-Environmental Air Quality Committee, and the Vice President of Association of Overseas Chinese Agricultural, Biological and Food Engineers.
