Nathaniel S Kollias, DVM, MPH, joined the AVMA in May 2020 as an Assistant Director in the Animal Welfare Division, at the AVMA headquarters in Schaumburg, Il. His primary role is assisting in implementing AVMA policies and objectives related to animal welfare and has a portfolio that includes humane endings, laboratory and comparative animal medicine, fish health and welfare, staff lead on the working group on the psychological impacts of humane endings and presides as the AVMA Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee chair. Prior to joining the AVMA, Nathaniel simultaneously received his DVM and Master of Public Health from the University of Missouri and has a wealth of experience and knowledge from various aspects of veterinary medicine. Following completion of his degrees, he worked a year in private practice at a small animal and exotics animal hospital in Las Vegas NV, which was followed by completion of a Veterinary Laboratory Animal Medicine Residency at the Center for Animal Resources and Education – Cornell University, Ithaca, NY. Most recently, he worked as a clinical laboratory animal veterinarian in the Houston Medical Center, Houston, TX. His areas of interest are in the promotion of diligent, ethical, and judicious use of animals in research by working with allied organizations to ensure the highest level of welfare of animals, adherence to federal, state, and local rules and regulations, promotion of the 3R’s principals of Russell and Burch, and educating the public on the importance and benefits of comparative medicine and basic scientific research. His overreaching professional goal is in the promotion of compassion, understanding, and an open dialogue on the psychological impacts and intricacies of end-of-life decisions across all disciplines of veterinary medicine.
