Dr. Soumik Sarkar received his B. Eng. Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2006 from Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India. He received M.S. in Mechanical Engineering and M.A. in Mathematics in 2009 from Penn State University. Dr. Sarkar received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Penn State in 2011. Currently he is an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science, a Walter W Wilson Faculty Fellow in Engineering and the Director of the Translational AI Center at Iowa State. Dr. Sarkar’s research interests include Machine Learning and Decision & Control with applications to Cyber-Physical Systems such as energy, transportation, design & manufacturing and agriculture systems. He co‐authored more than 200 peer-reviewed publications and received more than $45M research funding over the past seven years. He received the prestigious Rudolf Kalman Best Paper Award in 2021 from American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). Dr. Sarkar is currently serving as an Associate Editor of Frontiers in Robotics and AI: Sensor Fusion and Machine Perception journal and Plant Phenomics, a Science Partner Journal. He was selected to be an Iowa state Plant Science Institute scholar in 2018, received the Iowa State College of Engineering Award for Early Achievement in Research in 2019 and the Iowa State University Award for Early Achievement in Research in 2020. Dr. Sarkar is a recipient of the prestigious NSF CISE Career Initiation Initiative (CRII) award in 2015, Young Investigator award from the US Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) in 2017 and the NSF CAREER award in 2019.
