Graduate Student
Kansas State University
Manhattan, Kansas
Originally from Kansas, Macie received her Bachelors in Animal Sciences and Industry from Kansas State University in 2021. Involvement in research as an undergraduate was instrumental in her decision to pursue a graduate degree. Macie also had internships with two commercial swine production companies that solidified her interest in swine nutrition as a career. Currently, her masters research includes determining if increasing SBM in DDGS-based diets increases requirements for isoleucine, valine, and tryptophan for finishing pigs, with the thought being that balancing for BCAA and LNAA will give SBM-based diets greater pig growth performance than DDGS alone. She is also working on another study to determine the effects of a newly introduced commericial phytase product added in nursery and finisher diets on growth performance and bone mineralization. She helps manage data and complete statistical analysis for a commercial research program within a large swine production system. This entails weekly communication with on-site staff and data management and analysis for internal trials. Since being with the team at Kansas State, Macie has improved her competencies in data management and analysis, protocol planning and implementation, statistical analysis, and giving confident presentations. Upon completion of her masters program, Macie aims to continue to contribute towards the improvement of the U.S. swine industry through her professional career. With her experiences, Macie would be well suited for a position in technical services, director of nutrition or research, or in a production system.
