Tessa Marie Schulmeister was born at home, in the small town of Dothan, Alabama. After the terrorist attack of 9-11, Tessa enlisted in U.S. Navy for five years. Following an honorable discharge, she obtained an associate degree with emphasis in psychology from Blackhawk Junior College, a bachelor’s degree in biology from Northern Illinois University, and a master’s degree from the University of Florida in Animal Sciences. Tessa was encouraged to further her education and began the pursuit of a PhD from the University of Florida in Animal Sciences, under the supervision of Dr. Nicolas DiLorenzo. Tessa’s research is focused on the novel crop, Brassica carinata, and its potential use as a protein supplement in beef cattle. Tessa is employed as a full-time laboratory manager, but her favorite title is mom of two wonderful, not-so-little boys.
