The complex overlap of pain and addiction presents several public health and clinical challenges. This session will review the evolution of the prescription opioid epidemic, which led to the heroin and fentanyl epidemics. The presenter will then review data and clinical practice guidelines regarding the treatment of chronic non-cancer pain and the effectiveness of opioid therapy. Participants will also learn about options to simultaneously treat opioid use disorder and chronic pain.
