Psychiatrist/Core Faculty
St. Elizabeths Hospital Department of Behavioral Health, District of Columbia
Yara Moustafa, MD. PhD, full time psychiatrist and faculty member at St. Elizabeths Hospital Department of Behavioral Health in Washington DC. I have completed my residency training at St. Elizabeths Hospital, and I have also completed a Hospice and Palliative fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Florida. I started my first residency in Psychiatry at Cairo University, I became the chief resident of the Geriatric unit, which was a pivotal, life-changing experience. Working with an elderly population, with complex medical conditions and neurodegenerative disorders inspired me to engage in further education to grasp a stronger understanding about the molecular basis of diseases. This drove me to successfully complete both a master’s degree in Pathology in Egypt, followed by a PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Louisiana State University in the US. However, I was determined to practice medicine in the U.S., and this fueled me to study for the USMLE exams and to become ECFMG certified in less than one year, alongside working as a graduate assistant and PhD candidate. I volunteered as an extern at St. Elizabeths Hospital, a tertiary Psychiatric hospital of DC government, with strong emphasis on forensic services, where I was eventually matched to their psychiatry residency program. During my residency, I was able to engage in multiple scholarly activities, and I had the opportunity to present at different national meetings. I was also selected for a research track elective at NIH, studying the neurobiology of functional movement disorders. After I graduated as a chief resident in my program, teaching and guiding junior residents and students across multiple clinical and academic settings.
I do not have any relevant financial / non-financial relationships with any proprietary interests.
