Dr. McCarthy was Executive/Medical Director of Bi-Valley Medical Clinic Opioid Treatment Programs from 1980-2015. He has been on the teaching faculty in the Department of Psychiatry at University of California, Davis from 1980 to the present. His research interests are in methadone treatment and pregnancy.
He has co-authored several publications on maternal/fetal issues and outcomes in methadone maintained pregnant women. He recently also published the first studies of the use of the methadone/metabolite ratio (MMR) as a measure of individual patient metabolism. This paper described the use of this laboratory tool to show the profound metabolic changes occuring during pregnancy, necessitating the need for multiple divided doses of methadone to assure maternal/fetal stability.
He is a member of the California Society of Addiction Medicine (CSAM) Committee on Opioids and of the ASAM Women’s Action Group.
