Cannabis is becoming more popular and a majority of states in the U.S. have passed legislation allowing for medical use of cannabis or decriminalization of recreational use. A variety of products are available for use. This is important for practitioners, as patients will come to health practitioners for advice about cannabis and treatment of consequences of use. This session will educate practitioners about risks and benefits of cannabis, and different products available in the U.S. This focus session will inform attendees with a discussion—including clinical case examples—that will focus on cannabis products and compare and contrast regulations in states with and without either medical cannabis or decriminalization of cannabis. The presentation will be evidence-based and draw from existing medical literature, and will also include the panelists’ clinical experience with patients experiencing use and complications of cannabis. The emphasis will be on clinical issues, especially talking with patients about risks and benefits. Attention will be given to specific populations, including adolescents, pregnant women, and patients with chronic pain. The presenters are experienced clinicians who have been involved in evaluation and treatment of patients using various cannabis products. Attendees will be able to share their own experiences with patient use of cannabis to enrich the discussion. Time will be allowed for questions to the panelists so that there will be significant interaction during this session. This focus session will provide attendees with evidence-based clinical knowledge to help talk with patients about risks and benefits of cannabis, different products available, and differences in regulations in different states in the U.S.
