Julia Hunter, MD, MPH, FASAM, is board certified in addiction medicine and family medicine and is the medical director of addiction medicine at United Health Services Hospitals, Inc. She was named a Ruth Fox Scholar during her addiction medicine fellowship at Summa Health.
Dr. Hunter oversees United Health Services Hospitals, Inc.'s inpatient, outpatient, opioid treatment, and office-based opioid treatment programs. Her goal is to provide the highest quality care for people with substance use disorders through evidence-based medicine, data analytics, and staff education. Completed projects under her leadership include the creation and launch of a system-wide alcohol withdrawal protocol and a comprehensive program to start buprenorphine in the hospital’s emergency departments. Additionally, in the opioid treatment program, she is spearheading a hepatitis C elimination campaign and running a grant-funded contingency management program for pregnant patients.
Dr. Hunter is a clinical assistant professor of family medicine at SUNY Upstate Medical University and started an addiction medicine elective for medical students and residents that emphases evidence-based treatments for substance use disorders. She is a Providers Clinical Support System buprenorphine trainer, a member of the New York State Department of Health’s (NYSDOH) Buprenorphine Working Group and was recently appointed to the NYSDOH’s Substance Use Guidelines Committee.
She graduated with honors from Harvard University with a bachelor’s in history and graduated from Dartmouth College with a Master of Public Health. After attending SUNY Upstate Medical University, she completed her family medicine residency at the University of Vermont.
