Dr. Courchesne’s scholarly work has been focused on the impact of maternal substance use and maternal and child health. She earned her PhD in Interdisciplinary Research on Substance Use from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) and her Master in Public Health (MPH) degree from San Diego State University. Dr. Courchesne is currently investigating the impact of prenatal alcohol and other drug (e.g., opioids, cannabis, stimulants) exposure on child neurodevelopment and neurobehavioral functioning. She is also investigating the impact of substance use on prenatal and postnatal maternal morbidity and differences in healthcare utilization among individuals with and without a substance-related diagnosis (e.g., substance use disorder). Her previous research examined healthcare utilization among persons who inject drugs and predictors of breath alcohol concentration (BAC) among driving under the influence (DUI) program clients.
