Medical Student
University of Miami Miller School of Medicine
Maria Gabriela Rodriguez, B.S., is a current second-year medical student at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Born in Caracas, Venezuela, Maria grew up in Miami, Florida. She obtained her B.S. in Microbiology and Cell Science from the University of Florida in 2020 with minors in both Health Disparities and Art History. During her time in medical school, Maria has been actively involved in Miller's Department of Community Service (DOCS), especially through multiple student-run clinics housed within DOCS. Aside from volunteering at various clinics and health fairs, Maria was the logistics coordinator for the Infectious Disease Elimination Act (IDEA) clinic. IDEA was the first needle-exchange in all of Florida and also runs a wound-care and general health screening clinic on Thursday nights. Outside of school, Maria enjoys spending time with friends, reading, and exercising. She is passionate about various topics including opioid use disorder (OUD) and its treatments, as well as the intersection of OUD with women's health. She hopes to continue her involvement with IDEA and further her studies in order to become a true advocate for patients with OUD. She would like to thank Dr. Serota and Dr. Tookes for being the best mentors and for always encouraging their students to reach their full potential, as well as her family and friends for their endless support.
