Session 5: Identifying Unhealthy Substance Use: Assessment

The purpose of this session is to provide an overview of the assessment and treatment planning for patients with substance use disorders. The DSM-5 diagnostic assessment and ASAM criteria will be introduced, and participants will practice using these assessment tools. Mr. George will review the four dimensions of recovery and participants will have an opportunity to reflect on his presentation.

Use a systematic approach to diagnose, assess, and develop a treatment plan for people with substance use disorders
Review the DSM–5 Criteria for Substance-Use Disorders
Use the ASAM Dimensions as a framework for a comprehensive assessment
Describe levels of care in treatment for substance use disorders
Apply 4 Dimensions of Recovery to guide patient-centered assessment and treatment planning
