Joseph Bavaria, MD, is currently the Brooke Roberts-William M. Measey Professor of Surgery and Vice-Chief, Division of Cardiovascular Surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He was the 52nd President of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS). He is the past President of the Thoracic Surgery Foundation (TSF) and is the International Councilor of the European Association of Cardiothoracic Surgery (EACTS). He is the Founder/Director of the PENN Aorta Center which is a multidisciplinary program encompassing all aspects of aortic disease including thoracic aortic reconstruction and syndromic conditions. Additionally, Dr. Bavaria's clinical interests include a very busy program in the field of thoracic aortic endovascular repair (TEVAR). Dr. Bavaria's other clinical interests include valvular heart surgery including bicuspid aortic valve, and is a Primary Investigator at PENN for ongoing transcatheter aortic valve (TAVI) trials. He is Co-Director of the PENN TAVI Program and was the STS/ACC TVT Steering Committee Chair (2017-2020). He founded an active cardio-aortic clinical research group and is both the institutional and national primary investigator in over 30 industry sponsored, FDA IDE Phase I, II, and III trials as well as ongoing NIH sponsored clinical research.
