James E. O’Brien, Jr., M.D. is Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Co-Director of the Ward Family Heart Center at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City. He is also a Professor of Surgery at the University of Missouri – Kansas City School of Medicine.
He is recognized as a leading surgeon in the areas of pediatric and adult congenital surgery and performs cardiac surgery for newborns and children with congenital heart defects and children with acquired heart conditions. Dr. O’Brien received his medical degree from the University of Connecticut. He completed his Residency in General Surgery and a Fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. He completed a Fellowship in Congenital Heart Surgery at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
He has particular interests in neonatal surgery, complex cardiac reconstructions, and single ventricle physiology. His research study involvement focuses clinically on improving outcomes, developing best practice models, and safety in the operating room. He is also involved in basic research on the genetics of congenital heart disease.
