John K Pennington, MSHI, is Senior Data Manager at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Kirklin Institute for Surgical Outcomes (KIRSO). For the past ten years, he has honed his skillset as a Database Manager through work with four large, international cardiovascular registries. These include the Society of Thoracic Surgeons’ (STS)-INTERMACS (Mechanical Circulatory Support Registry) and its pediatric component (PEDIMACS), the World Database for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery (WDPCHS), the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation Registry for Mechanical Circulatory Support (IMACS), and the Aortic Research Consortium (ARC). He provides oversight for the data collection and management of STS Intermacs & Pedimacs, ensures proper implementation of database protocols for data collection, interfaces with physician researchers to facilitate project development and completion, and develops and implements policies for data quality. He supports data collection and outcomes analytics through registry revisions including application design, implementation, and maintenance; and data mapping across revisions and between registries.
